Japan mulls introducing Aegis Ashore BMD system to counter North Korean threats

Japanese defence minister Tomomi Inada has said her country is considering introducing the Lockheed Martin Aegis Ashore ballistic missile defence (BMD) system to counter North Korea's growing missile threat.

"In order to bolster capabilities to defend our whole nation all the time, [we] will promote consideration of introducing ballistic missile defence systems such as Aegis Ashore without any loose ends," Inada said during an Upper House committee session of Japan's national legislature on 15 May.

Moreover, the country will be advancing the introduction of the Patriot PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhanced (MSE) and Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IIA (RIM-161D) missiles, Inada said a day later in a press conference.
