Japan protests at South Korean naval drills near Dokdo/Takeshima

Japan said on 19 June it had protested against South Korean plans to conduct live-fire training near the disputed Dokdo/Takeshima islands in the East Sea/Sea of Japan.

"We cannot accept this, and it's extremely regrettable," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a regular press conference, adding that Tokyo had requested the exercise's cancellation.

South Korea gave prior notice to Japan that it would conduct naval live-fire exercises in waters east of the Korean peninsula - within a 150 x 55 km area southwest of the disputed islands from 09:00 to 17:00 local time on 20 June, a spokesman at the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) told IHS Jane's on 19 June.
