Japan to relax North Korean sanctions in response to abduction probe

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced on 3 July that his government will lift some of its unilateral sanctions on North Korea in response to Pyongyang's re-investigation into the fate of abductees and other Japanese nationals missing in the North.
After reviewing bilateral talks that were held in Beijing on 1 July, Abe and key ministers agreed to lift some of the sanctions Tokyo has imposed on Pyongyang on 4 July when North Korea's investigative committee is set up.
"We have judged that an unprecedented system was formed [by North Korea] in which national decision-making bodies like the National Defence Commission and the Ministry of State Security will be at the forefront of investigations," Abe said.
