Japan approves export of PAC-2 components for Qatar

The Japanese government on 17 July approved the export to Qatar of a sensor built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and used in the Raytheon Patriot Advanced Capability-2 (PAC-2) air-defence systems.
The newly established National Security Council (NSC) approved the sale, which would be Japan's first arms export under new guidelines set out in April that are intended to improve cost efficiencies related to indigenous defence development and production.
On 16 July a Japanese Ministry of Defence (MoD) official confirmed to IHS Jane's that talks were underway between MHI and Raytheon over the export of gyro sensors for the PAC-2.
