The Japanese government has approved the overseas transfer of missile seeker technology to allow joint research on air-to-air missiles for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II.
Officials at the Japanese Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) told IHS Jane's on 18 July that Mitsubishi Electric and European missile house MBDA will conduct a joint project to research whether Mitsubishi Electric's missile seeker technology could enhance the accuracy of MBDA's Meteor beyond visual range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) for use on the F-35.
The newly established National Security Council (NSC) approved the missile technology transfer on 17 July, the same day as approving the export of a gyro sensor built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for the Raytheon Patriot Advanced Capability-2 (PAC-2) air-defence system.
