Information on China's Type 032 test submarine, seen here in 2011, appears to confirm it is a replacement for the long-serving Type 031. (Via FYJS website)

Japan tracks suspected Chinese sub near Okinawa island

Kosuke Takahashi, Tokyo - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

20 March 2014

The Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced on 20 March that a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) aircraft had detected an unidentified submarine cruising underwater in the contiguous zone of the Okinawan island of Miyakojima on the night of 19 March.

The submarine was detected by a Kawasaki/Lockheed Martin P-3C maritime patrol aircraft. Although the MoD refrained from revealing the submarine's nationality, it is suspected of belonging to China's People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

The ministry said the submarine did not enter Japanese territorial waters, but crossed the contiguous zone surrounding Miyakojima from northeast to northwest on the morning of 20 March.
