The Japanese Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced it will establish a new Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) airborne early warning (AEW) squadron at Naha Air Base on Okinawa on 20 April. The move is designed to bolster the nation's defensive posture in the southwest, in particular to counter incursions into its airspace by Chinese aircraft around the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu islands in the East China Sea.
The JASDF will station four Northrop Grumman E-2C Hawkeye AEW&C aircraft in Naha, deploying from Misawa Air Base on the northern tip of Honshu. It plans to initially form the new squadron with about 60 JASDF personnel, but will increase this number to about 140 by the end of fiscal year 2014 (FY 2014).
