South Korea warns of North Korean nuclear test ahead of Obama's Asia trip

South Korea's Ministry of National Defense (MND) warned on 22 April that North Korea could be preparing to carry out a fourth nuclear test, citing increased activity at the country's Punggye-ri test site.
US President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and the Philippines on a six-day tour that starts on 23 April.
"Our military is currently detecting a lot of activity in and around the Punggye-ri nuclear test site," MND spokesman Kim Min-Seok told reporters in Seoul.
Airbus Defence and Space satellite imagery provided to IHS Jane's earlier this year shows ongoing excavation of what may be a new test shaft or tunnel on the northern side of the Punggye-ri test complex since January.
