Japan holds amphibious landing drill in Nansei island chain

The Japan Self-Defense Forces (SDF) on 10 May began an 18-day joint landing drill on an uninhabited island in the southwest Nansei chain - the latest in a series of exercises intended to demonstrate Japanese resolve in the East China Sea.
The Joint Staff Office (JSO) of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said about 1,300 SDF personnel - 500 from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF), 820 from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), and 10 from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) - are participating in the joint drill, which aims to regain control of an island captured by foreign forces.
