Japan, Australia commit to defence industrial co-operation

The defence and foreign ministers of Japan and Australia on 11 June agreed to create a framework for joint development of defence equipment and to increase joint drills between Japan's Self-Defense Forces and the Australian military.
The ministers also underscored their strong opposition to the use of coercion or force to unilaterally alter the status quo in the East China and South China seas.
"Ministers confirmed the substantial conclusion of negotiations on an agreement for co-operation in the field of defence equipment and technology," they said in a joint statement released after their fifth 'two-plus-two' meeting.
"The ministers also discussed preparations for joint research on marine hydrodynamics as an initial area of science and technology co-operation," the joint statement also said.
